Mental health problems don’t define who you are, they are something you experience. You walk in the rain and you feel the rain, but you are not the rain.
Mind is the actual driver of our body.
The haphazard that the covid created worldwide overshadowed the mental health problems the people were actually experiencing. Basically, human race never got enough time to assess themselves, they never were so free in their lives which directly lead to overthinking. This was also a time when their loved ones were stuck in some other country/city. Covid also lead to heavy layoffs and further unemployment. Thus, there was a huge decline in the morale of the people around. Our televisions, Instagram handles were flooded with the negative news and updates This was a time when people were also losing their loved ones to covid.
Thus, all this affected the mental health of the individuals significantly. The loss of your loved one can broke you in a million pieces and to recollect yourself is a task in itself. During Covid period overthinking became hobby for so many of us which ultimately led us to a very negative state of mind.
But many of us fail to understand that if we get physically damaged, we rush for a check-up, but to seek a mental support or consult a psychologist is still a stigma. Mental illness prevalence in India is among the highest in the world.
Therefore, after Covid, fortunately people started considering mental health as a thing, they started watering the concept of MENTAL ILLNESS. Nowadays clearly there is so much demand of psychologists around the world because visibly a lot of people are a patient of depression and so many other mental health problems.
Covid made people mentally weak, so much so that the youngsters are having severe anxiety problems. They tend to consume anti-depressants at such young age which will indirectly affect their future heath.
Personally, I think a positive state of mind can take you to the heights and makes you a very welcoming and happy person inside out. It keeps you sane enough in all the situations. Whereas a negative state of mind can close so many beautiful doors, it is very poisonous for a human body which will deteriorate your personal and career growth.
Thus, individuals should take care of your personal mental health by following listed ways:
• Sleep. Getting the right amount of sleep is a major selfcare goal. Indians, 93% of them, are sleep deprived. With less sleep, risk of dementia jumps up 30%. Risks of heart attack, stroke, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and other health issues also increase. Above the age of fifty, seven hours of sleep at night is recommended. But oversleeping is also bad. Sleeping more than nine hours a night is linked to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. A short nap in the afternoon, 30 minutes or so, can be refreshing. Longer nap may interfere with sleep at night. For a good sleep, turn off lights, have silence, have wedge-shaped or memory pillows, and a cooling mattress with breathing fabric.
• Healthy diet. A balanced diet, rich in green and leafy-green vegetables, different coloured fruits, and a sprinkling of seeds and nuts is beneficial. Avoid red meat.
• Exercise. Do aerobic exercises like walk, jog, cycle, swim for 45-60 minutes a day, five days a week. Do weight training two days a week.
• Substance use. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and drugs, and reduce intake of caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea, and sugary colas.
• Yoga. Physical postures (asanas), breath regulation (pranayama), relaxation (abdominal breathing), control of senses (pratyahara), and meditative techniques (dharana, dhyana and samadhi) are beneficial for overall health, and especially for mental health.
• Follow the path of spirituality- Associating yourself to god and keeping faith in him will always keep you in a very positive state of mind and free from all the worries.
